It is not a repair

Adding aeration does not restore a drainfield that has already saturated. If a contractor proposes an aerobic retrofit as a fix for a failed field, ask specifically what the county will accept — that answer decides it.

What is the difference between aerobic and conventional septic? +

A conventional tank works anaerobically — no oxygen, slow breakdown, and the soil finishes the job. An aerobic treatment unit blows air through the effluent so oxygen-loving bacteria do far more of the work inside the tank. The output is cleaner, which is the whole point: it lets a site discharge to a smaller or shallower field than the soil would otherwise allow.

Why would my lot need an aerobic system? +

Usually because the ground cannot support a conventional field. Slow-percolating clay, a high seasonal water table, a small lot, or proximity to a well or surface water can all mean the required separation and absorption area are not achievable. Cleaner effluent from an aerobic unit is one of the ways a design gets to a workable answer on a difficult site.

What maintenance does an aerobic system need? +

More than a conventional one, and this is the part worth knowing before you commit. There is a motor — an aerator or compressor — running continuously, which uses electricity and eventually fails. Most units require periodic servicing and many jurisdictions require a maintenance contract. Budget for it as an operating cost rather than a one-time install.
