How Does a Septic System Work?

Four parts, in order

A septic system is not a machine. It is a settling tank followed by a patch of ground doing biology, and almost every expensive problem comes from the second half. Understanding which part does what is most of what you need to make sense of a quote.

The house drain

Everything from the building leaves through one pipe. That single line is also the first suspect when the whole house slows at once — a crushed or root-blocked run near the foundation mimics field failure exactly, and costs a fraction to fix.

The tank

Solids settle to the bottom as sludge, grease and soap float as scum, and relatively clear liquid sits between them. Baffles at the inlet and outlet keep the two layers from escaping. The tank is a separator — it treats very little, and it is not where the system fails.

The distribution box

A small concrete box that splits the outgoing liquid evenly between the field's trenches. When it cracks or tilts, one trench takes most of the flow and burns out years early while the others sit unused — a common fault that reads as total field failure.

The drainfield

Perforated pipe in gravel trenches, releasing liquid slowly into soil. Bacteria in the soil finish the treatment. This is the component the ground dictates, the component that wears out, and the one that costs five figures to replace.

How-it-works questions, answered straight

What actually treats the sewage in a septic system? +

The soil does, not the tank. The tank is a settling chamber — solids sink, grease floats, and the liquid in between moves on. Treatment happens where that liquid meets soil in the drainfield, as bacteria in the trench walls and the ground beneath break down what is left. That is why the field is the part that matters and the part that fails.

Does a septic tank need bacteria added to it? +

No. A tank in normal household use is already colonised by everything it needs, continuously topped up. Additive products are marketed for maintenance rather than repair, and none of them restore a drainfield that has saturated. The thing that genuinely protects the system is pumping on schedule.

Where does the water go after the drainfield? +

Into the ground, and eventually into groundwater — which is exactly why separation distances and perc rates are regulated. New York's standards require a set depth of unsaturated soil beneath the trenches so treatment finishes before the effluent reaches the water table. On Capital Region lots with a high spring water table, that requirement is what forces a raised or mound design.
