The ground decides, not the catalogue
A septic design is arithmetic performed on soil data. Two numbers drive it: the percolation rate, which is how fast water moves through your soil, and the seasonal high groundwater level, which is how much dry ground sits beneath the field at the worst time of year. Everything else — trench length, tank size, whether the system sits in the ground or on top of it — comes out of those two.

Deep-hole and percolation testing
Test pits show the soil profile, any restrictive layer, and where groundwater sits. Percolation holes give the drainage rate. Counties want these witnessed, and the scheduling window is the reason design takes weeks rather than days.
Design flow and sizing

System selection

Design questions, answered straight
Why does a septic design need a perc test first? +
Because the perc rate is an input to the sizing formula, not a formality. It measures how many minutes it takes water to fall an inch through your soil, and the absorption area scales directly off it. Without that number nobody can tell you whether your lot needs a conventional gravity field or a mound — and those differ by tens of thousands of dollars.
Who can design a septic system in New York? +
It depends on the system and the county. Conventional designs are often accepted from a qualified designer, while engineered systems — mounds, raised fill, pressure-dosed designs — generally require a licensed professional engineer's stamp. Your county health department sets the bar, and it is worth establishing which applies before anyone draws anything.
How long does the design and permit stage take? +
Usually several weeks, and longer for engineered systems that need stamped plans. Most of that is not drawing time: it is waiting for a witnessed soil test slot and then for health department review. If your system is failing rather than failed, starting the design before it gives out entirely is what keeps you out of an emergency.
Can I reuse an old septic design for a replacement? +
Rarely. Standards change, and a design drawn decades ago will not reflect current separation and sizing requirements. More practically, the ground itself may have changed — a field that has been in service for thirty years has altered the soil beneath it, which is one reason replacements are often sited in a new location.
