Septic Tank Covers & Lids

Albany Septic Pros is a septic system installation and replacement company serving Albany and the Capital Region. Tank lids are the most underestimated safety item on a property.

The hazard people underestimate

A septic lid is the only part of the system where a person can fall into an enclosed space full of gas. Steel tank tops from the 1960s and 70s corrode from beneath, so a lid that looks solid can be paper-thin where it matters. Every year somewhere produces a story about someone stepping onto one.

If yours is steel, or if you do not know what it is, that is a reason to have it looked at rather than to test it. Locating and assessing is covered on the tank locating page.

A riser ends the problem. Bringing the opening to grade with a sealed, secured lid means the tank is never buried, never lost, and never dug for again — and it makes every future pump-out cheaper. The riser installation page covers what is involved.

Tank cover questions, answered straight

Is it safe to open a septic tank cover? +

Treat it as genuinely dangerous rather than merely unpleasant. Tank gases are toxic and can be fatal in a confined space, and an older lid — particularly steel — can be corroded enough to fail under weight. Never enter a tank, never lean over an open one, and never leave one uncovered while you fetch a tool.

How deep is a septic tank lid usually buried? +

Most Capital Region tanks sit with the lid somewhere between a few inches and two feet under grade, because that is how they were set before risers were routine. Landscaping and regrading over the decades tend to add to that, which is the main reason lids get lost entirely.

Should I replace a concrete lid or fit a riser? +

If the lid is sound and you are happy digging every few years, replacing like-for-like is fine. If it is cracked, or if you have just spent time finding it, fitting a riser while the excavation is open costs comparatively little and removes the problem permanently — see the riser installation page.
